I first saw Casa Montaña, at least the outside, while following a night-time Holy Week procession in Cabanyal down by the sea. By the torchlight and accompanied by the banging drums I saw painted on a wall 'Bodega since 1836'. I went back the next day to see if I could find it, assuming it was an ancient and dusty off-licence. I never found it, and people I asked said that the place they assumed I was looking for was long gone. Over the following months I kept coming across references to a place called Casa Montaña as being a leading light of Valencian, and world, wine. When I finally got there, I had to nip out to make a phone call round the corner, and there I saw the same wall that had first caught my eye months before. It was well worth the wait. The staff are charming, and Héctor behind the bar is Argentine and was able to tell me all about the Argentine community in Valencia – I like to know because I vote in Argentine elections. The owner, Emiliano García, also makes the excellent Solo red wine.
